According to a survey by the eWAY online payment research platform, sales in Australia’s e-commerce industry have surpassed physical retail. From January to March 2015, Australian online shopping spending was US$4.37 billion, an increase of 22% compared to the same period in 2014.
Today, more and more people are choosing to buy goods online, so much so that online sales growth in Australia has outpaced in-store sales. The peak period for their online shopping is from 6 pm to 9 pm every day, and customer transactions during this period are also the most intense stage.
In the first quarter of 2015, online sales between 6pm and 9pm local time in Australia were just over 20%, yet it was the strongest time of day for overall trading. In addition, the best-selling categories are home furnishings, electronics, travel and education.
Paul Greenberg, executive chairman of the Australian Online Retailers Association, said he was not surprised by the “strongest time period”. He believed that the time after get off work is the time when online retailers perform best.
“You can close your eyes and imagine a working mom with two kids having a little me-time, shopping online with a glass of wine. So that period has been a great time for retail,” Paul said.
Paul believes that 6pm to 9pm is the best sales time for retailers, who can take advantage of people’s desire to spend, because people’s busy lives will not change immediately. “People are getting busier and busier, and leisurely shopping during the day has become increasingly difficult,” he said.
However, Paul Greenberg also proposed another trend for online retailers. He believes that they should focus on the growth of home and lifestyle products.
